Today our stake will hit a quarter of a million names completed this year. That is quite a milestone to reach this early in February. We are so pleased at the consistent work that is being done stake-wide. A huge thank you goes out to those dedicated indexers in all nine wards who have made it a daily priority in their lives...Thank you!!
Thank you also to those who call when they have questions or when they have learned something useful to share. Three helpful tips recently obtained are as follows: #1-For those indexing marriage certificates and come across a bride who is on a second or third marriage, index the brides surname as written even if it is her previous name and NOT her maiden name (as seen by the name of her father). #2-When indexing census sheets with different forms of Ireland listed, headquarters now says to index what is written instead of defaulting to "Ireland" which is the only acceptable form in the lookup. For example use "Northern Ireland" or "Irish Free State" or whatever variation is recorded. And finally tip #3-Use an asterisk not a question mark, period or blank to indicate a missing or unreadable letter in a name. For example, on the Enlistment Registers sometimes the first letter(s) of the surname are tucked into the center of book and not seen well enough to index. If you cannot tell what the name is, use an asterisk and then type the rest of the letters, for example *allahan instead of trying to guess if it might be Gallahan or Callahan. This also applies to letters in the middle of a name or word that is completely illegible. But speaking as an arbitrator, I always appreciate personal interpretations and recognize the spirit has a great influence to help decipher difficult handwriting.
Thank you for your great efforts and for the time you spend indexing!
